Operation Green Tide makes headline news
21 September 2009
It was just another job and a day behind the lens for our Simon, but the Operation Green Tide project has made headline news in this month’s Photo Pro Magazine and made 3 Men’s charismatic photographer almost a centrefold.
The magazine heard that the project had produced some pretty remarkable images and decided to include coverage of the incredible shoot in its September issue, which is out now.
Simon was asked to photograph this major operation by Southampton’s Oil Spill Response (OSR) team, which included coordinating a massive 37 ton Hercules aircraft, two spotter planes, a 30 knot deployment barge and a very fast RIB out on the Solent, so, naturally, it didn’t take long for him to get kitted up and out on the water.
And, after a day jumping from barge to RIB to Hercules and flying around the Solent at breakneck speed with camera and radio communications equipment, it became clear that the images he’d captured were worthy of exposure by the national press.
‘This is the kind of front line photography that I love,’ says Simon. ‘The pressure of working offshore with more than fifty people, numerous sea and aircraft and millions of pounds of kit certainly got the adrenaline pumping. But it all came together really well; the weather was like the Caribbean and the real-life operation was a huge success. And of course, to have the project showcased in a national pro photography magazine made me justifiably happy!’
Simon’s shots are to be used as the focal point in OSR’s new offices in London, Southampton and, if all goes well, its offices in Asia and the Middle East too.
Another successful mission accomplished…
